TEMS Newsletter #4 |
TEMS - which stands for Trusted European Media data Space - is a joint undertaking of 42 organisations representing hundreds of stakeholders from 12 countries in the cultural and creative sectors. TEMS is the flagship European initiative to build a resilient data-driven ecosystem in the media sector. |
STORIES ABOUT TEMS |
As we move forward in our mission of shaping a more collaborative and secure media ecosystem, our participation in events focuses more on what each of our trials can bring to the European media landscape. |
Nassima Auvray, from Orange Business, highlighted the challenges facing today’s media industry in a rapidly evolving digital landscape at the annual event organized by the Association for data intermediation (AID). Addressing an audience deeply invested in the future of information ecosystems, she introduced TEMS as a transformative initiative that aims to create a secure and collaborative environment for media organizations, tackling pressing issues like disinformation while fostering innovation and trust. |
|
HENNEO and its affiliated companies hiberus and Alayans, showcased TEMS role as a cornerstone of Europe’s media innovation strategy. At the First Gaia-X Spain Data Space Summit in Madrid, they explained how TEMS trials are, among other things, testing innovative data-sharing models, examining who shares and uses the data, and identifying customer profiles. Each trial is underpinned by advanced technology that is being meticulously configured to ensure scalability and reliability but above all, to ensure better exploitation of data. Their presentation emphasised that TEMS’s decentralised approach ensures data sovereignty and secure management, empowering organisations to make informed decisions while upholding user trust. |
|
Oscar Lazaro, CEO of Innovalia and the coordinator for the TEMS consortium, took the stage at the Future Media Hubs gathering in Bilbao, where he offered valuable insights into how the media sector can evolve beyond traditional community-building to embrace broader, more integrated ecosystems. Lazaro highlighted the pivotal role of trust in fostering successful partnerships, a simple concept that becomes more challenging when multiple parties—some of whom may be competitors—are involved. But collaboration remains the foundation for innovation and by extending data governance beyond individual organizations it is possible to create opportunities for shared insights and new use cases, benefiting all partners involved.

TRIAL UPDATES |
Until 2026, TEMS will roll out 8 TRIALS covering themes spanning from the exchange of fact-checked news content, user data, personalised advertising, content syndication, or new distribution formats. Learn more about trials 5 and 6. |
TRIAL 5: Collaboration in Production Chain |
TAMIS is building a specific data space for the audiovisual ecosystem, starting with the creation and exchange of data during the production phase up to the distribution. It aims at enhancing metadata associated with audiovisual works to improve the findability, among other functionalities. |
TRIAL 6: B2B exchange platform for content syndication |
Increasing visibility/exposure and/or knowledge transfer, and/or monetization through republication is possible thanks to a platform that allows for sharing media content produced by community and independent media organizations. This would also facilitate cross-language search functionality for personalized recommendations, automatic generation of transcripts and translations, etc. |

Additional updates by our partners: |
2024 was the year to define requirements and specifications. This year, our work will focus on implementation: from formalising the detailed technical architecture with the tech providers, to working on more detailed business models and governance. Our goal is to develop a platform that fosters trust and adds value to TEMS participants. |
- TEMS tech providers continue their work with all trials on interoperability, front-end platforms, and search and discovery. Exploring different approaches for the front end is sparking concrete discussions about the value they can offer to data consumers and data providers and what are the first business models that could be adopted within TEMS.
- Acatech has led a series of workshops to move forward the definition of the governance of the media data space, and all trials have actively contributed. As part of these efforts, discussions around the scope of the M18 implementation over the past few months have raised important questions about data access policies—such as which data and service providers and consumers are ready to join Tems and under what conditions.
- Gaia-X Voices has released a use-case testimonial titled TAMIS in TEMS – Setting up the basis for an Audiovisual data hub, authored by our partners ISAN International Agency and France Télévisions. The document highlights how TAMIS addresses key challenges, such as fragmented data and inefficient workflows, to enable seamless collaboration among producers, broadcasters, and rights managers.
By leveraging ISAN identifiers and interoperable metadata formats, TAMIS improves data accuracy and automates rights reconciliation, eliminating costly manual processes. Aligned with Gaia-X principles—data sovereignty, scalability, and interoperability—TAMIS fosters a trusted and dynamic ecosystem.
This use-case testimonial focuses on the potential for innovation and efficiency, encouraging stakeholders, including producers, broadcasters, and rights managers, to adopt similar practices or join TEMS initiatives.
