The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) delivered a compelling presentation at the Gaia-X Summit 2024, detailing its ongoing work on the Trusted European Media Data Space (TEMS). Held on November 14–15 in Helsinki, Finland, the summit gathered industry leaders to discuss advancements in secure, federated data infrastructures under the theme, “Empowering Global Data Spaces: Shaping Tomorrow’s Cloud Infrastructure.”
In its intervention during the Gaia-X Voices: Use Case Testimonials from Data Space Projects segment, the EBU outlined TEMS’ mission to modernize Europe’s media landscape. The initiative, which bridges public and private sectors, aims to enhance collaboration across a fragmented ecosystem comprising 200,000 media companies and one million jobs. The EBU emphasized how TEMS tackles challenges like rising competition from global platforms and the shift to digital, data-intensive technologies.
Key points from the EBU’s presentation included:
Pilot Projects and Use Cases: Eight trials are defining TEMS specifications. These include initiatives to streamline metadata exchange, improve collaboration in content production, and support cross-border content distribution.
Bridging platforms together: The EBU described efforts to federate existing platforms, such as TAMIS in France (for metadata collaboration) and Drive in Germany (for news usage data exchange), demonstrating the benefits of unifying old and new systems within a decentralized framework.
Collaboration Across Sectors: The EBU highlighted its consortium of 42 partners from 12 countries, including broadcasters, news agencies, producers, archives, and tech providers, all contributing to the design and deployment of this transformative data space.
Media Sovereignty and AI: During the panel discussion, EBU described how a Media data Space could help secure and harmonize access to media content by Gen AI and ensure Media get a fair share of the value generated. Tems Apps store will also become the repository of AI tools with high standards of trust and transparency, that media need for content production and distribution.
The EBU’s involvement in Gaia-X reflects its commitment to ensuring the media industry remains competitive, collaborative, and innovative in a digital-first world.
